A new era for sustainability
The PRISMA project aims to support the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) by fostering a circular bioeconomy, reducing waste, and promoting reuse in alignment with the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition. Leveraging digital transformation and emerging technologies, PRISMA focuses on transforming the coffee supply chain into a "digicircular" model, optimizing resource usage and driving innovation for sustainability.
In recent years, the food industry has shown increasing interest in circular economy models, particularly in recycling coffee processing waste, such as spent coffee grounds (SCGs). Global coffee production has risen by 60% over the past 30 years, with exports reaching $35.6 billion in 2018. Italy, the second-largest importer of green coffee beans in Europe, saw its coffee market valued at $3.16 billion in 2020, with a projected annual growth rate of 2.3%
until 2026.
The PRISMA project proposes developing a supply chain based on the Physical Internet (PI), Blockchain, and digital technologies (IoT, AI, Big Data, Digital Twin) to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the coffee supply chain, with a particular focus on using SCGs. This aims to make the transport, management, and use of physical goods more sustainable globally.
Currently, most SCGs are disposed of in landfills, contributing to atmospheric pollution. However, SCGs can be used to produce biofuels, cosmetics, food, and eco-friendly materials. Projects by companies like Starbucks and Nespresso have explored using SCGs in agriculture and recycled paper production.
